10.2 From the Study Guide summarize the development of the gay movement and indicate what events contributed to the radicalization it ultimately had to take in order to bring about change. Link your summary to your Portfolio page. In the final sentences of your summary indicate what currently has happened that threatens the forward thrust of the movement.
The Gay movement is a movement about freedom and the right to choose in America. Homosexuality for so long has been looked at as a sin by the masses. People were ostracized if they were found out to be gay. People we not safe if they were found out to be gay. Gay women and men had to hide their feelings, desires, sexuality, etc from their families, friends, neighbors, coworkers etc. Then came the 60's and the sexual revolution hit. People were more open about love and sex and the gay community was no different. They fought against the tides and their lifestyles became more widely accepted. Then something tragic hit 20 years later and that was the mass spread of HIV/AIDS. This epidemic that was spread through bodily fluid and therefore through sexual intercourse spread rapidly and quickly through the gay mens community who were known to be promiscuous. The response to this epidemic was radio silence. No one wrote about it, spoke about it, did research for it, funded groups to raise awareness, etc. This very obvious push back from the days before the sexual revolution really showed the gay community where they were in the world. It really showed that there was still so much more ground to cover before they were widely accepted as equals by a large portion of the country. This then spurred many activists to represent their community themselves. The Normal Heart is a fictitious story based on real life events that talk about one of these activists and his radicalization is trying to get his community the voice they deserve and the voice they have fought so hard for. They too are normal people who have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This rise in vocalization from the community did help bring about changes, acknowledgements, etc which led to research into how to save peoples lives who have HIV/AIDS. Though it is now 2018 and the early years of this epidemic are behind us we still have lots of ground to cover when it comes to equality. With the election of our most recent president many people have come froward with hateful bigotry. The fact that ignorant mindtets like this still exist and that people still think that gay people should not have equal rights shows how much farther we have to go as a group of people. Everyone deserves equal rights. Everyone has a right to equal rights.
